Synopsis

During the 1980s, slashers terrorized America. With machetes and masks, these unstoppable killers stalked college campuses, quiet suburbs, and lakeside cabins.

Thirty years ago, Bobbi Metzger survived a massacre at her 16th birthday party. She spent decades putting her life back together.

Tonight, Bobbi will face a new killer: a high-tech slasher hell-bent on opening the doorway to an abyss of unimaginable horror.

How long can Bobbi survive this nightmare? What will she do to protect the people she loves? How much blood is she willing to spill?

My Thoughts

I haven’t read a good horror book in a while, and I will admit, I had my doubts about this one. I found it a little hard to get into at first and there were SO MANY ERRORS!! Apparently, the L key on Rafael’s computer was not working in the draft that I started reading.

I had almost called it quits when I realized that, for some reason, I had TWO copies of the book (I must have been accidentally sent the wrong one, and then was sent the correct copy.)

This copy was SO MUCH BETTER!! (There were still some missing words and spelling errors.) But, it was legible!

This book was SO GOOD! It fed my little Horror Queen heart with all of the gory slasher fun it could take.

A rag tag group of slasher survivors have found each other through one of the survivors writing a book. But, do you really SURVIVE horror like that? When one of these slashers has killed everyone you love, what kind of life can you lead afterwards?

All of these survivors are crippled with various disabilities. How could you leave your house again? Look in a mirror again? How could you not crawl into every bottle of booze or pills you find and never come out? And what if your slasher wasn’t gone… What if they were still out there. What if they were on their way to find you again?

“If you know you’re born to drown, you needn’t fear the hangman. I know who’s going to kill me.”

This book was like an 80s/90s slasher flick on crack. Basically, take every slasher villain you know (Chucky, Jason, Mike Meyers, Pinhead, etc.), throw in some real life “slashers” (Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed and Belle Gunness) and put them ALL into a book. That’s pretty much what you have with “the Mask Beneath Her Face”. I won’t go into too much detail as I don’t want to ruin the surprise twists and turns of this novel!

It had all the wonderful tropes that we all know and love too, slasher chasing you? RUN UPSTAIRS! Have your slasher captured in a cage that is nailed into a crate? OPEN IT UP AND CHECK ON HIM! I love that Rafael Chandler had a couple tongue in cheek moments with these beloved must haves of the horror genre. I couldn’t put the book down!

I also love that he had an explanation for everything, why do slashers always go after teenagers?

“What can I tell you? I always went after teenagers, because they’re not precious like babies, or productive like adults, or pitiable like the elderly. They’re just reckless bodies, strong and young, healthy and disposable. With those red hearts inside. Have you tried killing one?”

If you have any love for old slasher flicks, please, do yourself a favour and READ THIS BOOK!! 💖💖

The Mask Beneath her Face is Best Served with a” Slaughterhouse Shooter”

Now, I got this recipe from Mashables Horror Movie Villains Inspired cocktails. I will say right now… I CANNOT RECOMMEND IT! Ha ha! It curdles the instant you make it. I figured I would post it still because, I can’t win them all! If I post reviews for bad books, than I should post the drink fails that I invent, or find as well! (It’s only fair!) plus, it still made for a good picture to go with the book!

Ingredients

  • 1/8 oz Lime Juice
  • 1 1/4 oz Vodka
  • 3/4 oz baileys (or Irish cream)
  • Splash of Grenadine

Directions

  1. Mix Vodka and Lime Juice
  2. Slowly pour in Irish Cream over the back of a spoon
  3. Splash in a little Grenadine so it looks like bloody brains
  4. IF YOU MAKE THIS AND IT WORKS, LET ME KNOW… If you drink it after it doesn’t work.. SEND ME PICTURES!! (SERIOUSLY, I’LL MAKE A POST OF MY WALL OF SUPERHEROES. WHOEVER CAN DRINK THIS!!)
  5. CHEERS!!

  1. I chose books by the cover (cause I’m smart and all) I would not have chosen this one. Glad to have a nice surprise. I’l give it a try.
That drink would be fantastic without Baileys…

  2. A bartender friend of mine once said that the drinks tend to curdle if all the ingredients are not ice cold. You probably know that though. Anyway, the book sounds really great and gory.

    1. They were ice cold… As soon as I saw “Baileys” and “lime juice” I was thinking…. Are you SURE about this??
I even tried adding them different ways and using different Irish creams in case some had less real cream than others. (I will admit though… I did NOT try Baileys. So, if anyone wants to try this with BAILEYS let me know how it turns out!! I had 3 other Irish cream liqueurs in my house… And NO BAILEYS! What is WRONG with me??) 😉 Then, I mourned the loss of my alcohol through my trials and called it a day.
I tried to think of a new drink, but I figured I should own my successes and failures… We can’t be perfect all the time! 💖🍻

      1. So very true, although the drink itself looked pretty good on your blog. I won’t even bore you with the amount of times I’ve screwed up in the kitchen, although sometimes has pictures to make it onto my blog. I agree that it’s our failures that helped us get better. Plus sometimes, at least in my case and perhaps in yours, the kitchen screw-ups are so hilariously funny that you have to share them with the world, if for no other reason than you don’t feel like you’re the only one laughing at yourself. 🙂

    1. But, horror BOOKS are better than horror movies because it’s easier to skip the scary parts! Ha ha! And ya. I figured I would own my fail. It was fitting for the book still! I should have called it the “Skingraft” after one of the slashers in the book! .. That’s sure what it looked like! 😂😂

  3. I freaking loved this book! And haha I feel his pain, I had the ‘Z’ button go out on my laptop for a full novel haha. At least there aren’t many Z’s in most sentences. I think the L would definitely be worse haha

    1. But the weird thing was that words that featured L had it (eg. Love, Laura, etc) but when L was the 2nd letter, it wasn’t there!
      Flung was Fung
      Floor was Foor
Etc. It was so strange! 😕. But, thankfully I found the other copy so all was right with the world!! 😄🍻
