4.5 out of 5 Stars

Thank you to Rockstar Book Tours and Kat de Falla for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

Synopsis

Manda Wolfgram is a struggling literary agent who is looking for the perfect manuscript to land in her lap and the perfect man to land in her bed. When the sixth-floor hottie finally asks her out, she gets more than she bargained for. How can a girl wrap her brain around a Shakespearean actor who writes erotica?

Harry Sackes leads a double life: making a career as an author by day and dipping into the dark underworld of criminals at night. The moment he sees Manda in his twin brother’s arms, his whole life becomes his personal Shakespearean trag-comedy of mistaken identity and unrequited love in this fast-paced chick lit romance.

My Thoughts

Simply stated, I loved this book!

Upon completion, I looked back on my notes to write this review and I had highlighted a number of quotes simply stating “Soul Sister”,

“Funny how I lived in a building with hundreds of strangers and it never seemed to bother anyone but me. Everyone was so engrossed in antisocial technology. Always looking down and missing the whole world happening around them. Engaged in electronic conversations when flesh and blood people surrounded them. The modern day domination of parasocial relationships made me sad.”

“Women should meet men at balls, not bars.”

I don’t know who was more of my “Soul Sister”; Kat De Falla herself, with her fun and flirty writing style, or Manda, who was such a likeable, down to Earth character, I couldn’t HELP but identify with her! (plus, she was a literary agent.. So, I spent most of my time wishing to BE HER! 😉)

Manda’s character did lose its similarity to me fairly quickly (I literally have a note on the quote that lost her that “Soul Sister” status that simply says, “and this is where we part”)

“But Manda’s sincerity and innocence made me want to hold her in my arms and never let go.”

Ha ha ha!!

This didn’t lose me at all, though. Manda was likeable and endearing. She wasn’t the strong, assertive heroine type, but she wasn’t the snivelling, whining, “I need a man to complete me” type that we find in so many romance novels (thank God). She was just human… although, she did want to throw herself at Harry/Dane a little quickly.

Which leads us to Harry,

““How do you make swigging from a beer bottle look so damn sexy?”

Setting her beer down, her face turned the cutest shade of crimson.

“I’m the furthest thing from sexy. And I’m sure you’ve seen many a girl drink from a beer bottle.”

“I’ve seen them do a lot more than that.””

He definitely needs to grow on you, and I really wanted to learn his story, but my initial note at this point was” Yikes! Coming on a bit too strong, you’re not auditioning for a porno!”

This is another cute Rom Com sort of read but, with some really interesting depth! I wanted to know the story behind Harry’s dark past and penchant for self destruction and revenge,

“Walt Disney got one thing right; it sure as hell was a damn world of tears, hopes, and fears— at least to me.”

This book is definitely NOT your typical Rom Com. There is mystery and darkness to it as well. I found myself wavering over whether I would even WANT Harry and Manda to end up together! (That man needs to get some things together first… and probably get an STD screening!! Ha ha!)

I also wanted to know if Manda would stop saying that everyone was “Not for Me!”

It’s definitely not a realistic read, some Insta-Love that may not make complete sense, but that’s excusable sometimes when there is more depth to the story than just a fluffy romance. It was very enjoyable to get to the heart of a dark, tortured erotica writer.

Not for Me is Best Served with a “Proper” Shot of Tequila

I’ve had a super crappy, stressful week and, when life gives you lemons……..

Do a shot of Tequila with them!! 💖💖

You will notice that I put “Proper” in quotations… You will also notice that the Tequila I chose is a less than stellar brand. THIS HAS NO REFLECTION ON THE BOOK!!

The reason that I did this is that Manda does a shot of Tequila with her brother at a bar in the book, and talks about how they used to do them all the time, complete with the lemon and salt. This touched my, long ago, frat girl heart…. I have since aged (no, really!) and discovered that Tequila should be

  1. Decent (what is shown above is my “everyday Tequila”… No, that does NOT mean that I drink it every day. It just means that it’s my “bar stock” Tequila. (by the way, if you’ve never tried Sauza it’s better than José Quervo, which is garbage.)
  2. Chilled.
  3. Sipped.

But, when I read this passage about doing a shot of Tequila with the salt and lemon I thought, you know what? This book has lightened my spirit, it’s made me feel young! I’M DOING THAT SHOT!!

Now, I’m not going to do a shot of Tequila with salt and lemon with my REALLY good Tequila (since, that’s sacrilege) but, I will enjoy it with my regular Tequila

So, embrace your inner college student and raise a shot!

CHEERS!!

    1. I can’t wait to check out her other books! They seem VERY different from this one.
Just make sure you only have 5 Tequila then, don’t want that 6th one going to your head! Although, wasn’t the saying “One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila… Floor”?? That person was just a lightweight. 😉😂💖🍻

  2. I think a typical rom com would not be my think – so happy to hear there is so much more in it – mystery sounds like my thing for sure!😊

Great review, it’s brilliant getting to know authors. 🌟

  3. Tequila. Ouch. The book looks interesting, though I’m not into graphic novels or comics, or anything similar. Well, except for the Archie comics. Do those count? What would you drink with an Archie comic? Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. Lol! This wasn’t a comic, it was a romance… Sort of? A romance with a different vengeance sort of twist!
Hmmm… It would have to be an alcoholic milkshake! 💖💖 What’s more wholesome Americana than that? And, then jug head has something to wash down all of those hamburgers! 😂

      1. Haha! I’ll have you know that I purchased The School of Essential Ingredients last week, SOLELY based on your positive feedback of it. So I do take your advice on occasion. 🙂

      2. I actually quite enjoyed it, though I’d still characterize it as chick-lit. But the descriptions of cooking, food, the pleasures of putting together recipes, etc., was very soothing and calming and the prose was lovely. My beef with most chick-lit is that the prose sucks ass. However, in this case, it did not and I am glad you nagged me relentlessly to read it. 😉 My only problem is deciding what to blog from all the foodie descriptions. All of them sound so good!
