Synopsis

Viola’s always been that girl from that family, so a scholarship to a prestigious private school in Florida was supposed to be her ticket out of poverty and into a brand-new life. But Viola’s secrets have followed her. Her relationship with the intelligent and gorgeous Riel should have been the salvation she needed—he understands her troubled past better than anyone. But then weird things start to happen.

Frightening messages.

Missing personal items.

The unsettling feeling that she’s being watched.

Viola’s never been one to give her trust easily, but she’ll need to trust in Riel if she’s going to survive her stalker. Because she’s not fighting for a new life anymore—she’s fighting to stay alive.

My Thoughts

The concept of this book has definitely been done before, the hayseed girl in the fancy prep school where she doesn’t belong with a stalker trying to get close to her, but, it still kept me interested throughout. I still wanted to figure out who the stalker was and if Viola would manage to keep her secrets safe and stay in school. The school setting itself was well written, I loved the ivy league feel as Viola tries to settle in as a “fish out of water”.

I do wish that the characters had been more fleshes out, though. Viola had a pretty definite character, she had a well defined backstory explaining her hard working attitude and her big heart. Everyone else just seemed so one dimensional in comparison, they sort of came and went depending on the needs of the story without a lot of focus on who those characters were, or what their motivation was. I liked a lot of the characters (even the ones I hated), I just wanted to get to know them more.

The romance was a little rushed as well, (although, Riel sounds pretty hot, so why wouldn’t it be? I’d give in pretty quick too! 😉) she winds up with the scholarship Riel is supposed to get, he’s VERY angry about it and promises to be pretty hard on her as her peer mentor, then maybe a couple of chapters later, the whole thing is dropped. I would have liked a little more animosity before the thaw came.

The last thing that I will mention is silly (I know) but, it still bothered me. The narrative alternated from the point of view of Viola and that of her stalker, when it was her stalker it would actually say at the top of it Stalker…. I’m pretty sure we would figure that out without being explicitly told. (like I said, a silly nit pick.)

All in all though, I read the whole thing in one sitting and I was interested to get to the, definitely thrilling, conclusion!

  1. I don’t think you are being nitpicky…Unless I am nitpicky myself, bit having stalker at the top of it…does seem a bit too much. That said, despite some of the characters being a little bit like cardboard, it sounds like a thrilling read for sure. Nice one! 😊 And of course, great review😀

  2. Yummy drink, Nicole, I do not know how you think up so many different and fun drinks. You would make a great baker. This book sounds good. The topic is well trodden but it is very common and relatable.

    1. Definitely! There were a couple of things I wish had been elaborated upon, but all in all it was a solid read with a shocking conclusion! Just what I needed! 💖💖 I’m entirely sure that strange drink pairings is my superpower! I don’t think I’d make a great baker though, I like to take too many liberties with the measurements… Who DOESN’T want more gin in their cocktail?? 😉😂🍸

    1. It felt mean to pick on it, and I didn’t mean it to be rude, it just seemed a little obvious. When it goes from the MC a female in a private prep school, to someone saying “I was in her room last night, she didn’t know I was there….” I thought it didn’t really need a header.
