Synopsis
As witty as it is heartpounding, this fresh take on the beloved superhero genre is all about finding your own way to shine even when it seems everyone else around you is, well… super.
Never trust a guy in spandex.
In Abby Hamilton’s world, superheroes do more than just stop crime and save cats stuck in trees―they also drink milk straight from the carton and hog the television remote. Abby’s older brother moonlights as the famous Red Comet, but without powers of her own, following in his footsteps has never crossed her mind.
That is, until the city’s newest vigilante comes bursting into her life.
After saving Abby from an attempted mugging, Morriston’s fledgling supervillain Iron Phantom convinces her that he’s not as evil as everyone says, and that their city is under a vicious new threat. As Abby follows him deeper into their city’s darkest secrets, she comes to learn that heroes can’t always be trusted, and sometimes it’s the good guys who wear black.
Chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads, The Supervillain and Me is a hilarious, sweet, and action-packed novel by debut author Danielle Banas that proves no one is perfect, not even superheroes.
My Thoughts
You know that Superhero that everyone idolizes and adores? The one who your friends drool over and write fan fiction about?
Well, what if that Superhero was your brother?
Growing up as a middle child (good ‘ole middle child syndrome) I could totally relate with Abigail, it’s hard to stand up to something like that, to be noticed. But, what if you met someone you finally thought understood you?
And then found out he may be a Supervillain? Do you tell your family? How do you share with this person when you both have secrets you must keep? Could he really be as Evil as people say he is? And more importantly… WHO IS HE??
Am I using way too many “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog” GIFs in this review? Maybe. But, that’s the vibe I got from this book. So, in other words, it had me melting into a little puddle of cuteness!
It had me thinking, is it easier to talk to someone behind a mask? Is it simpler to reveal your secrets when you feel like not knowing who the person is will keep those secrets safe, like a priest in confession or, I suppose like us as bloggers. It’s always easier to bare oneself (ha ha! Bear, Shalini and Nina 🐻😜) when there are no personal and immediate consequences.
This was a sweet story, based more on the romance blooming between Abigail and the Iron Phantom, than a lot of Superhero/Supervillain battles, but I was okay with that. Lighthearted and sweet, I couldn’t put it down!
I’m going to get a little off-topic here… But, it also got me wondering, it seems that cities with Superheroes always have more crime than cities without!… Do the Superheroes actually CAUSE more trouble than they’re worth? Do criminals always want to take on the the Heroes and come out of the woodwork, whereas normally it would be a small, quiet city?
I absolutely highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Superheroes (and Supervillains!), to anyone who loves a certain Musical that will remain nameless 😜 and to any Geeks at heart (and with heart! 💖💖).

I got lucky this one was so great! I COMPLETELY overatretched myself this last couple of weeks so I was literally reading this book until about 2 am and had to sleep, wake up about 6 and finish it, so my posts that usually go out at 6 didn’t go out until 7 today!! It was worth it because this book was FANTASTIC!! I regret nothing…. Until I’m falling asleep at the family function I have later. Ha ha! I’m too old to not get proper sleep! 😂

Oh, I feel ya! These days I need my 8 hours or I become a grumpy old man. We authors are in awe of your resolve, though!
(I know I’m speaking on behalf of all authors, but we had a meeting of all the authors and they unanimously agreed that your commitment to book blogging is commendable.)

Well, I’m glad the vote came out in my favour! I lost some sleep over that one as well!! 😂😂

This sounds like a fun book, I do like me some superhero’s. The drink sounds good too though I might leave out the bitters & Grapefruit (yuk) 😀

Ha ha! Then it’s just a sweet mess without the grapefruit and bitters! I’m sure you could use a different juice, orange juice would work too. In needs something to cut the sweet liqueurs! The book was so good!! How can you go wrong with superheroes, supervillains, and romance!! 💖💖

I always love your enthusiasm! I also loved your question about the cities having superheroes also having more crime! I think they must stir trouble up. 😂 Love the drink choice, too, as always! Yummy!

Well, I just think it’s funny that these places have so much crime when there is someone taking care of the cities that criminals should be AFRAID OF!! Plus, this book is set in Pennsylvania…. Since when does Pennsylvania have so much crime?? I’ve been there. It’s a pretty subdued state! (super nice too!) so, I blame the Superhero for all the criminal activity there. 😜

Yay for Pennsylvania! 💕 I’ve lived there twice but not currently. You are right- it is a nice place!

Definitely not a place you would think to need a Superhero! 😉

I have seen this book pop around on quite a number of blogs recently, and it seems like a very enjoyable novel to read. Of course as you know, I totally don’t like superheroes or any other geek stuff, so yeah this is probably not my cup of tea……😂😂
Great post 😊😊

For some reason, your comment ended up in my spam! WordPress is so weird. I absolutely know that you aren’t big on geek stuff. You’re way to chic for that! ❤️😂 It’s such a great read!! Just be aware that it’s a little more YA romance than action superhero! 😉

Yup…I wrote a post about it last evening…I have lost count of the number of times that has happened now…ugh..so annoying. But thanks for rescuing my comment 😀😀
Lol…yeah..I knew I was totally believable when I wrote I did not like geek stuff 😂😂 Okay…I will keep that in mind, thanks for the heads up 😊

the drink is very ‘to die for’ but looks very fruity

The bitters and the grapefruit juice definitely help. It’s fruity, but tart. 😊

You really are the queen of book reading… I need to learn your secret!
Also I tagged you in my latest post! The famed Anime Harem tag 🤗
LikeLiked by 1 person
Woot!!! I really need to do that one!!! 💖💖 My secret to reading is a distinct lack of sleep. I hear it’s for the weak anyways!! 😂😅 Heading to your post to check out who you chose!! I’ve been thinking WAY too hard about this tag and I have to just make my choices and be done with it!! 😂😂

I hear you, thinking about who to pick was sooo difficult. So I just looked at all the anime I know and which guy I always liked…I didn’t care about which category they belong to…that made it too difficult for me 😂
Lack of sleep is a good tip for reading, bad for my job though…😂😂😂

Ya… Bad for my job too! Ha ha!
I think. That’s exactly what I’m going to do, look at all my anime and just chose… Categories be damned! I’m going to get this thing done!!

I may have to throw a little reverse harem in the mix though!! I can’t do without some of my ladies!! 😢😅

It’s such a fun read!! Loved the sweet romance, and I loved the world building! It was great to have a world where super powers were just something that you could get with your DNA, like brown eyes or freckles. I also loved how the past reflected on what these superheroes/villains were doing. It all felt very genuine!

I just love the fresh premise of this book! I’m not a “standard” superhero aficionado, but the twist on this sounds perfect. What a riot. You hooked me, Nicole. 🙂

It’s definitely not “standard”, that’s what I loved about it as well! Fresh is a great way to describe it! It was fresh and fun and sweet and a little bittersweet as well. The prefect mix! And I nice easy read to top it all off. The perfect book for a sunny lazy day. 😊😊

It’s so cute!!! I feel like you would actually like it because the Superhero stuff is a focus, but not HUGE… It’s like the beginners guide to the geekdom. You’ll read about superheroes in a cute YA romance and then we won’t be able to pull you out of the comic book store. 😜
