5 out of 5 Stars

I received an ARC copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

Roxanne Fosch had a perfectly normal life at the age of twelve. Cool, popular, pretty, smart. Her dreams of a perfect, successful and prosperous future seemed well within her grasp.
By the time she was twenty-two she had become a commodity. A fugitive. She was being hunted.
As Roxanne embarks on the dangerous quest to search for half-truths about her past, she discovers she’s not just an abnormal human, but a rarity even among her Fee peers.
She is hunted by scientists, keen to exploit her extraordinary abilities, as well as other beings far more dangerous whose plans for her she cannot fathom.

My Thoughts

This book…. just, wow. I am so angry that it took me SO LONG to get to it! (I’M SORRY JINA!!) It is absolutely one of my favourite reads of this year!! I sat down, and I did not stand up again until it was done (I don’t think I could have with my knees like jelly every time Luke was around… me-ow.) Now, on to the wonderful characters!!

Eliza/Roxanne, the main protagonist, is strong, independent, after all the shit she’s been through she’s still fighting, after all the shit she goes through when the book starts she’s still fighting, and there are new discoveries all the time about who she is and what she can do.

Logan…. The new love of my life (Seriously. Everyone. Hands off.). Strong, assertive, sexy as hell, kind, gentle, but with a hard ass streak and secrets… At the same time infuriating with his calm demeanour and his know it all attitude… Mostly because he DOES seem to know it all. I also hate men who can sleep so easily right after a fight. Strange thing to mention, but you’ll understand when you read it (notice how I said WHEN and not IF??)

So, this may sound like a weird thing to like and gush about (although, I’ve mentioned it before), but I liked that realistic things were mentioned! Roxanne actually needing to use the bathroom, her being dirty and smelly when they’re on the run, the fact that she was lucky to have the opportunity to shave before Logan checks her for a tracking device.

Roxanne is still a little dumb in the way of men in a way that makes me want to hit her. Like when she notices “a look of disgust in his eye” and thinks that Luke is disgusted at the thought of touching her, while searching her for a tracking device… Couldn’t be anything else, right? Like the way you’ve been treated? Looking at your bruised and broken body and thinking about what you’ve been through?? Naw… got to be just little old disgusting you *slap some sense into you*

The world building was amazing. That may seem like a weird thing to say as it is based on Earth, but it is an Earth where things are different (or are they??). Different creatures live and hide among us, and there are those who would seek them out. There are so many secret groups and societies and I loved how Jina seamlessly integrated them into our own world.

The one thing that I found irritating is …Who’s Michelle?? Hopefully she’s brought to light a little more than this mysterious friend she could talk to and got a purse from. When were they friends? What happened to her? I don’t even know if she’s important in any way but, I NEED TO KNOW!!

And of course it contains the most wonderful, and frustrating theme in all books containing romance, ever. Misunderstanding. JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO EACH OTHER FOR ONCE AND THIS WHOLE THING CAN BE AVOIDED… but, I love it.

This book was everything. Fantasy, Sci Fi, Romance… it is just good for everyone!! Would I recommend it?? WHAT DO YOU THINK?!

    1. It’s the 1st in (probably) a 3 book series (still to be determined). Also, absinthe tries to kill us all. Ha ha!! (I had a really bad night with it as well….) but, it’s a super tiny amount. You could probably make the drink without it even, but I feel like it is the bite in the Wolf’s bite.

  1. Huh…one of your favorite reads of the year huh? Of course a sentence like that totally doesn’t make even a bit curious about this one. Sigh….And I already hardly had anything to read anyway 😂😂

    1. IT’S SO GOOD!! Seriously, if you’re going to make time for ANYTHING this year, have it be this…. And Go Home Afton by Brent Jones… (but, that’s really short!!) JUST 2 LITTLE BOOKS!! 😂😂 I loved that GIF. It’s exactly what I would want to do to Roxanne… Since I can’t, as she is fictional, I will live vicariously through this GIF. 😉😂

  2. Well these are high praises!! And now I’m so excited for Logan!!!
“I also hate men who can sleep so easily right after a fight.” And THIS soooo much. Like, I’m tossing and turning with anxiety and going through everything I said, and they’re just like, “I had the best sleep of my life.” …Yep, thanks dude.

    1. Umm… No. First of all, I was just planning out my corrections to the couple of people to whom I called Logan, Luke (just finished “the lying game” by Ruth ware for my book club meeting I had tonight.. It wasn’t good) so I think I had Luc in the brain. I felt so bad… I LOVE Logan… But, I would never forget Darcy’s name.. 😉🍻💋
