5 out of 5 Stars

If you missed my reviews of book one (Go Home, Afton) and two (See you Soon, Afton) of the series, go check them out!!

Synopsis

Is evil a matter of choice, or are we born that way?

After a string of brazen arsons overwhelms Wakefield’s first responders, the town is placed on lockdown, rendering Afton and her companions vulnerable to attack.

In a last-ditch effort to protect her inner circle, Afton attempts to establish an improbable truce with her archnemesis, leading her into a deadly trap more than a decade in the making. Survival will mean choosing to embrace her dark side, once and for all.

Nice Try, Afton is the third of four parts in a new serial thriller by author Brent Jones. Packed with grit and action, The Afton Morrison Series delves into a world of moral ambiguity, delivering audiences an unlikely heroine in the form of a disturbed vigilante murderess.

My Thoughts

“I find myself wondering if there really could be such a thing as a good twin and an evil twin. And do we choose to be good or bad, or is it already inside of us? And if we do get to choose, when do we choose?”

I think that Brent, himself, said it best…

Afton Series.jpg

This series honestly keeps just getting better and better! I love the growth in Afton’s character. Starting out the lone wolf thirsting for blood, and slowly getting sucked into a social circle… Still thirsting for blood! I feel like she’s got her own Scooby gang going on now! I love the struggle she has with trying to keep hold of the old Afton, but as soon as someone is in trouble, her true nature reveals itself,

“Who are you, anyway?” He flopped down next to Tia and folded his arms across his hulking chest, glaring at me through narrowed eyes. “It’s like I don’t even know my own sister anymore. You want us all to believe you’re hard as nails one minute, out hunting down outlaws for the thrill of it all. The next, you’re sticking up for a guy that tried to have you killed. And you’re pleading for Clara’s clean getaway, too, when I could’ve just as easily hunted her down and shot her dead.”

Afton is really starting to flesh out as a character as she pieces together who she really is,

“Badass, I guess? Vigilante? Murderess? Accidental superhero? Oh, forget the goddamn labels. They screamed Afton Morrison, because with them on, that’s exactly who I saw staring back at me.”

And things are DEFINITELY getting exciting!! You know that blood lust you’ve been feeling reading these books and thinking “…..for a ‘serial killer’ series, there isn’t a whole lot of KILLING!” well, prepare to have that appetite satiated!!

“You’re . . . ready now?”“Ready?”“To kill, Afton.”“That’s it, isn’t it? That’s when I see you. When I’m craving a kill. You’re, like, the devil on a junkie’s shoulder.”

There are some shocking deaths in this instalment! (one in particular got me right in the feels!) You want to see some real emotion from Afton?? Make sure you get to this book!!

“Did this fill me with shame and remorse, like slaughtering Pete Albright had? After a moment, the answer was obvious. There was no guilt inside me. I mean, not even a hint of it. A soft tingle of sexual arousal, sure, at watching her struggle against the profuse leaking from her head. Not to mention the severe pain she was experiencing, I’m sure. But as far as I was concerned, I’d made the world a better place, even if my actions had made her world a whole lot worse.”

If I haven’t said this enough before…  YOU ALL NEED TO READ THIS SERIES!! Brent is a master with characters and atmosphere. The more I read, the more I WANT to read!!

Nice Try, Afron is Best Served with an Afton’s Greek Martini

Now… don’t shoot the messenger. I had to go for this cocktail because of the name. I mean… COME ON!! I found it HERE. My issue is that is is neither Greek (…maybe the pepperoncini makes is greek??), nor a martini… Confusing?? Yes. But, it IS delicious! And the colour matches the violent nature of this book!

  1. Well…shock of all shocks, I already have this entire series on my Goodreads to read list: Someone was very convincing in her reviews…Gee I wonder who that person was 🤔🤔
Anyways, if I had not already had added it, this one would have totally sold me on it. I love your enthusiasm for this series, and it pretty much shows through the entire post. I always love shocking and unexpected deaths (you would think that I am a very bloodthirsty person…but I am not…I think??😱😱), but this certainly made me put this higher up on my (unending) to read list. I am really interested in Afton as a character. She really sounds like a bad ass. I need to lay off watching anime/movies and start spending more time reading stuff. Maybe I need a vacation?? Oh wait…I already have one 😂😂
Fantastic post, for a terrific sounding book! Job well done I would say! 😘❤️😊

    1. Well, maybe you should cut out all that Arrested Development I hear you’ve been watching… Don’t remember where I heard that from… 🤔🤔 But, I’m definitely passionate about this series.. From the very beginning Afton really spoke to me. I live that she’s not your typical girl. She reminds me of someone… With her crass ways and tough times with the feels… Can’t quite place my finger on who… 🤔🤔 But, the series keeps getting better and better… I almost want to extent the rating system so I can give it more than 5 stars! 😂😂🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hmmm…and a character that reminds you of someone huh? For the life of me, I have no idea who you might be talking about 🤔🤔😂😂 Well…as I said…you really got me interested in this series, and I hope I will be able to check it out soon 😊😊 Thanks for this great post! 😘😊

  2. Reblogged this on Raistlin0903 and commented:
With all the time I spent on watching movies/anime, one would almost forget that I also love to read. I just spent way too little time on it, and that is totally on me. But luckily I follow a lot of book bloggers that always seem eager to add new and interesting books to my never ending to read list. Now, this series has me incredibly intrigued. I have pretty much moved it over to the number one spot on my list of books I want to read, so I thought I would share a review for one of it’s installments by the amazing Nicole. It’s called the Afton Morrison series written by author Brent Jones. After having read the premise for this series (and the truly bad ass sounding main character) I’m pretty sure that you will be just as intrigued as I am. So, go ahead and check out this series, as I will be doing in the coming weeks. And I’m sure that the author will definitely appreciate it as well!

  3. Hi Nicole,

I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve (quite thankfully) received quite a number of very positive reviews of Nice Try, Afton so far. That being said, I feel your review captures the essence of book three better than most.

I received a critical review not long ago of book one, Go Home, Afton, in which this person said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “I thought this book was going to dive right into the killing. The author refers to his character as a disturbed vigilante murderess, and yet she kills no one in the entire first book. In fact, she’s never killed anyone.”

Fair, I suppose. At the same time, without some indecision on Afton’s part, without making some crucial errors before acting on her impulses, it would’ve weakened the overall story. That’s what I think, at least.

The Afton Morrison Series often gets compared to a certain Showtime series that ran for eight seasons. And while I loved that particular show, its biggest problem was that it ran for eight seasons and had an awfully disappointing (and anti-climatic) conclusion.

I sincerely believe that the writers wrote themselves into a corner, despite having ample source material to draw from. By beginning the series with the premise that our protagonist was an active serial killer, and that he was a clinical psychopath, it left very little room for character development as the seasons went on. You can see hints of this when our lead explores the feelings he may (or may not) have for his adopted sister in the later seasons. But this entire premise is faulty, of course, as psychopaths don’t experience those kinds of feelings for other human beings. And so, in its final days, the show brought in a doctor to reinforce the idea that our lead was a psychopath, even though we, as viewers, still had doubts at that point. It added a hint of drama to the show, even if that drama was, in some respects, dishonest and contrived.

My point is, I wanted to create a story that, first off, needed to be told in four parts. Sure, I could’ve published the entire story as one complete four-part novel back in June, but I felt that each book represented a stage in Afton’s growth and, in that regard, warranted its own part and distinct plot.

Second, I wanted readers to get sucked into rooting for Afton, despite the heinous acts of violence she’d go on to commit. Simply stating, from page one of Go Home, Afton, that Afton is a crazed murderess, would’ve made it a lot harder to get readers on her side, I think. Readers need to go on the same journey Afton does.

And while readers (and reviewers) often make comparisons to that Showtime series I just mentioned, I drew a lot more inspiration from the Netflix series, Ozark.

What’s beautiful about Ozark is that we see otherwise moral people decay into immorality. Gray areas, if you will. Not because they are inherently evil people, but simply because, at each turn, they’re forced to choose between bad and worse. They make the best possible choice they can at any given moment, and as we see, those choices often end up making things worse for our protagonist(s).

This is the essence of what I wanted to capture in The Afton Morrison Series. As the story unfolds, Afton does everything she can to honor her mother’s dying wishes. To make the world a better place, she admits, even if that means doing horrible things in the process. But we soon discover that good intentions can have negative outcomes, and negative intentions can have positive outcomes. There are times, after all, that if Afton had listened to Animus, she could have ended up saving lives, as strange as that sounds.

Anyway, I apologize for hijacking your blog post and comment section with this miniature essay of mine. I found your review thought-provoking and figured I’d weigh in with my own two cents.

Thanks for reading, and thanks so much for being one of Afton’s biggest online advocates.

    Best wishes,

    Brent

    1. I love your comment!! Hijack away any time, Brent. You just said, so eloquently, EXACTLY what I think!
I haven’t mentioned this “certain Showtime series” as, besides a certain “dark passenger” I really didn’t get a comparison between the two. Afton is VERY different in how she looks at the world and her kills. Hence who I put in the quote about her lack of remorse.
I think speaking of the “grey areas” and the “decay into immorality” is the exact feeling you evoke with your series, so far… Except, I feel that she’s less moral before she takes that decent into her darker ways (if that makes any sense) she starts off trying to force morality into her chosen kills, and when things actually progress she IS fighting for morality even if she doesn’t realise it any more!
As I said in a prior statement… I wish I could give this one more than 5 stars because you really kicked things into high gear with the fight between Afton’s nature and her heart… Amazing work and I absolutely can’t wait (and at the same time I’m completely terrified!) to see how it all ends!! 💖💖💖💖 Thank you, so much, for allowing me the privilege to take this journey with you, and with Afton! 😊

  4. So is the series science fiction or fantasy or based in reality? Your review didn’t make that clear though it was very well written and the series sounds great. And as usual, your cocktail looks delicious! How are you not an alcoholic? Oh wait……..🤣🤣🤣

    1. It’s based in reality. I’ve written reviews for the 1st 2 books of the series, so it’s hard to write a lot without recapping or giving too much away. Ha ha! They are definitely reality based, and AMAZING!! And, as for being an alcoholic… I’m not. I’m an alcohol conoisseur!!!

Hopefully, it’s just the weather like I hoped before. Whatever it is, I hope it’s something that relaxation and just taking some time for you can solve. 😊 I really hope you relax, and feel better!!
