4 out of 5 Stars

I’m SO EXCITED to be on this tour today!! Thank you to Shalini at Digital Reads Blog Tours, and to Robbie Yates for having me here today!

If you missed my review of Robbie’s other fantastic book “Daniel Daniels and the World’s Worst Zoo“, go and check it out!!

Synopsis

The humming noise got louder. Adam willed himself to focus. He had to finish his math test.

Suddenly, the noise became unbearable. He glanced up.

Mrs Murphy was inches away, leaning over another kid’s desk. Was the noise coming from her?

***

Every child remembers a teacher who was a little bizarre, prickly or ill-tempered. Some teachers, though, are very odd indeed, and warrant some closer attention…

This quirky chapter book will thrill kids who are adventurous, brave, and a little bit cheeky!

My Thoughts

What can I say about this book besides “IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!” It really brought me back to my days of “Goosebumps” books by R.L Stine (don’t ask me why… this one isn’t scary… but, something about Mrs. Murphy. Guess you’ll just have to read this one and find out for yourself!)

One of my favourite things about this book was the friendship between Adam and Jennifer. It really took me back to my school days where my friends and I could have a conversation across a room without even saying a word.

“Despite their differences, Adam and Jennifer were a fiercely loyal pair. In fact, they could have an entire conversation in class just by lifting their eyebrows and winking. *** Once, Mrs Murphy came back into class after lunch with chewing gum stuck to her plump bottom. Adam had to stifle his giggles. “What are you sniggering about?”Jennifer’s eyebrows had frowned. “Look at her bum,”he hinted with a quick flick of his gaze. “Oh my goodness!”Jennifer’s frown said. “There’s chewing gum stuck to Mrs Murphy’s bottom! We should tell her!”“And ruin the fun?”said Adam’s smile. “I don’t think so!””

Adam’s quick thinking and imagination, and Jennifer’s more level-headed intelligence were a great pairing! But, I loved Adam’s logical curmudgeonly (I feel that Adam would love that word…) side, as well,

“Well, 5M is not like that. One day, Mrs Murphy is going to disappear, and something terrible will happen! The kids in our class are rascals! They will probably start a fire, or begin rioting!”

“You know ,” said Dad, “for an eleven-year -old, you’re quite a grumpy old man, Adam.”

I had to include the answer, in this review, to an important question that Adam asks,

“Adam smiled. Trying to confuse Mrs Murphy was fun. “It’s just that, I want to know whether , you know, when I grow up‌—‌ well, when you became an adult‌—‌ is it still fun to read books that use silly words, like ‘bumfuzzle’ and ‘discombobulate’?””

Just so you know, Adam?? Yes….. it is still fun! Ha ha! …although, I am quite partial to cahoots and bamboozled.

I feel that this is a great book for readers young and old!

One Very Odd Teacher is Best Served with Tangy Zangy Vodka

20181004_080359-1.jpg

This concoction was inspired by a conversation in the book about strange teachers and their quirks.

“Mr Lorenz would go bonkers if anyone ate blue candy. Only blue candy‌—‌ other candy was okay, you see. He had decided that because no food in nature was naturally blue, the blue candy must be full of chemicals.”

This quote just sprang off the page and grabbed me… I knew what I had to do. INFUSE VODKA WITH BLUE CANDY!!!

It’s so easy and delicious!!

Ingredients

  • Vodka
  • Blue Candy (I went with Tangy Zangy’s, but feel free to choose whatever candy you want! It’s all delicious!)

Directions

1. Put candy in vodka

2. Leave to sit for at least 12 hrs. The longer you leave it, the stronger the flavour.

Funny enough, after I started this idea Robbie suggested that a “Screwdriver” would be a good drink pairing for the book (Ha ha, Robbie!) So, feel free to slap some Orange Juice in that baby for a zany Screwdriver!!
