Synopsis

Some secrets stay buried for a lifetime, but nothing lasts forever.

Connected to a number of high-profile deaths, Afton finds herself not only under scrutiny from the chief of police, but damned in the court of public opinion, as well.

In the aftermath of the fiery assault on Wakefield, a low-level gang has infiltrated the town, flooding its streets with bad drugs, killing several teenagers. As Afton prepares for the final showdown with her tormentor, she marks each gang member as a target for elimination, in a methodical plan to gain the upper hand. What follows is a race against the clock that will keep readers guessing until the very last page, as Afton risks life and limb to fulfill her murderous mission of doing good in the world.

Time’s Up, Afton is the fourth and final part in a new serial thriller by author Brent Jones. Packed with grit and action, The Afton Morrison Series delves into a world of moral ambiguity, delivering audiences an unlikely heroine in the form of a disturbed vigilante murderess.

My Thoughts

Any of you who have been reading my blog for any amount of time probably know just how much I love this series. I held off as long as I possibly could before reading this last instalment because I just couldn’t accept that it was going to be over.

I’ll try to keep this review as professional as I can and try to refrain from gushing and fan girl-ing too much (yes, it’s ABSOLUTELY a word!!) …..OH, WHO AM I KIDDING!! THIS. WAS. AMAZING!

omg chris pratt.gif

Afton really has her hands full in this one! Still out for revenge, and on top of that, with all of the police tied up in all of the arson and murder going on, a gang has infiltrated Wakefield and they’re selling tainted methe to kids. Do you think that Afton is going to stand for THAT?? I sure as hell don’t!

But, first she has to deal with all of the fallout. Her actions have hurt more than herself. Being pulled into the public eye has brought her family and friends with her,

“Yes, victim, having first been falsely accused of murder, then taken hostage by her twin sister a few days later. Oh, how I detested being made to look so weak and fragile for the world to see, although it did make me a bit easier to forget.”

I loved all of the comments about the battle of the sexes in this one! Afton has some great insight into the differences between how men and women are treated with regards to crimes and sex,

“I’d never cared for playing the disenfranchised-woman card, but I had to wonder. If it had been some local man accused of murdering a known sex offender, would anyone have had a problem with it? No, he probably would’ve been labeled a modern-day hero. He probably would’ve had a parade held in his honor. He might’ve even ended up becoming our next mayor. A woman, on the other hand, was expected to embrace cruelty and injustice with tenderness and compassion, flower petals and femininity, love and forgiveness.”

I was a little sad that my favourite character wasn’t in this book much (I’m not going to say who, so when you read the series you won’t know who lives, and who doesn’t! But, she did crop up to give some amazing words of wisdom!

“We all wear masks, Afton. Sometimes it’s worth finding out what’s hiding underneath.”

The thing that I loved most about this whole series, is that even in the midst of a moral crisis, even though Afton is in chronic struggle trying to comprehend whether she’s essentially good or evil, she never loses her hilarious dry, deprecating humour. So, in the midst of death and destruction, you suddenly find yourself laughing out loud!

“And, of course, the material of the dress slid up again, which meant I was, more or less, sitting on two bare ass cheeks. And, like, I knew it was stupid, but part of me was convinced I’d contract herpes from the seat before the night was over.”

““How do you, like, not smell that, Amy? Must be there’s a dead possum under the floor or somethin’ like that.” He motioned to the spot where two floorboards were missing. “Want me to get down there an’ take a look for you, girl? Before we get busy?” Was hunting for dead possums foreplay for rednecks?”

But, the best part about THIS PARTICULAR instalment in the series is that the ending is not tied up into a nice neat bow. If you’ve started it yourself you know from the very first book that there can be no perfect ending to this…. okay, let me rephrase that. There can be an ending that’s WRITTEN perfectly! But, there is no “happily ever after” for everyone in this one! It is all tied up enough to be immensely satisfying, but left open enough that you are left thinking “….but, what is going to happen next?”

This is absolutely one of my new favourite series’ and I hope to see more from it, and from Brent in the future!

Time’s Up, Afton is Best Served with a Game Changer Cocktail

20181028_003435.jpg

It goes without saying that this series was a Game changer!! It was all just so amazingly well written, and such a wild ride. But, this cocktail was really inspired by one of my favourite quotes from the book,

“The only sure things in life are death and taxes, or so the old adage goes, but I disagreed to an extent. There’s a third constant in life, and that is change. Nothing stays the same forever. Change is an unstoppable force. It’s inevitable, whether we’re prepared to embrace it or not.”

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Dark Rum
  • ½ ounce Spiced Rum
  • 2½ ounces orange juice
  • 1½ ounces pineapple juice
  • ½ ounce cream of coconut
  • Freshly grated nutmeg for garnish

Directions

  1. Pour first five ingredients into a blender with ice
  2. Blend until smooth
  3. Top with Nutmeg
  4. CHEERS!!

  1. yay! 🎉🎉 Glad to hear that the series went out on a high note, and it’s all ending perfectly as well. It’s hard to wrap up a good series, because expectations are usually very high for it. But it sounds like Brent definitely succeeded. I know how much you love this series, and I am very glad that it was such an engagin final installment. Fangirl all away girl: We all do that, especially for things we are very passionate about! Terrific review as always, and the game changer cocktail looks delicious 😊😊

    1. Yup!! Yay, indeed!! I held off to the last moment before reading this one, as I was so worried that the way it ended might ruin the whole series!… IT DIDN’T!! It was so amazing! And in typical Brent fashion, he even managed to throw in an Easter Egg for one of his other books…. I’m not going to ruin anything, but if you ever read his other stuff he LOVES to slip in little references. It’s so fun! 😂😂

      1. I am lately doing a lot more reading, so hopefully I can get to these soon. I have a readalong coming up in November (dare I say it…for a….(cough, cough…Stephen King novel…runs away in fright….😂😂). But yes this entire series is on my to read list. And with the series coming up soon it seems like a perfect gift for Sinterklaas (nope that’s not a typo…it’s a Dutch festival unique to Holland that’s kind of like Christmas…but isn’t…lol😂). It’s on december the 5th 😊
But yes ever since having read these reviews for the series…I am very curious about them. Can’t wait to finally read it! 😊😊

      2. Hi Nicole,

Did you check out my previous blog post on Easter eggs in Go Home, Afton?

I’m glad you caught the reference to Fender in book four, but there were, in fact, quite a few Easter eggs throughout all four books.

For instance, there’s a subtle reference to Chambers in both books two and four, although I haven’t released Chambers yet, so I didn’t expect anyone to catch it. And mark my words, it’s subtle.

Perhaps, most notably, there are numerous references to The Fifteenth of June throughout the series, starting with Becca and Neil (Junior) in book one, and then, in books three and four, the connection Ray Moss shares with Drew Thomson.

I like to try to contain my writing within one world, even if the titles I’ve written span different genres.

    2. Hi Michel,

Out of curiosity, are you subscribed to my email newsletter?

No pressure if you aren’t or don’t want to be.

But just in time for Sinterklaas, I might be announcing a special offer…

      Just sayin’.

      1. Tomorrow IS the official release day. Weird that it was released early here! Good that you’ve got it all ready to go for tomorrow, though!! You need to let me know what you thought when you’re done!! ❤️

      2. Just to clarify, the official (global) release date for Time’s Up, Afton and The Afton Morrison Series (complete series bundle) is tomorrow, October 29. In eBook format, that is. It’s available for pre-order now.

The paperback and audiobook versions of the complete series are both available to purchase now, only because I wasn’t able to put them up for pre-order. I basically had to hit “publish” sometime in October and hope for the best. Frankly, I expected that they’d be released after the eBook, but I was wrong.

  2. What a terrific review! You have finished all four and I still have book one here to read, but I will get to it eventually, and I am still super excited. It’s great to know it ends as well as it started, and that drink sounds super yummy!

    1. The drink was great! And, hurry up and start the series so I have people to talk to about it!! HA HA!! There’s nothing worse than reading an amazing series and looking around like “doesn’t anyone understand what they’re missing out on?!?” 😭😭

  3. As always, Nicole, thank you for a thoughtful review. I have zero interest in trying the drink, of course, but likening The Afton Morrison Series to a game-changer is pretty awesome, I think. —Brent

      1. I’ll have two new short stories coming for you in December, Nicole. Chambers and Row Seventeen. That’ll have to do for now. 😉

  4. I was looking forward to this review. Lol. I love how this series has you so ramped up. And awesome line: A woman, on the other hand, was expected to embrace cruelty and injustice with tenderness and compassion, flower petals and femininity, love and forgiveness.
Such a pretty way to state such an ugly truth.

    1. Brent defintitely has a way with words, that’s for sure!! 👍👍 And, I’m SO ramped up!! It’s funny, because it’s done and I’m STILL ramped up!! Apparently he has a couple of short stories coming out in the next couple of months, so I don’t have to wait long for another dose of Brent Jones! 😁

      Liked by 2 people

      1. Let me know when your paperback arrives, Nicole! You can read the entire series again, and get ramped up all over again. 😉

Yes, I have two short stories ready to publish. Just waiting for the covers to be finished at the moment, then I can get them formatted properly and up for pre-order.

Of course, odds are fair to good that those subscribed to my email newsletter will have a chance to get both of them for free. Maybe, at least…

Both Chambers and Row Seventeen are a bit, um, abstract, let’s say, compared to the realistic style I generally stick to in storytelling. I think you’ll dig it.
