Synopsis

My Thoughts

Any of you who have been reading my blog for any amount of time probably know just how much I love this series. I held off as long as I possibly could before reading this last instalment because I just couldn’t accept that it was going to be over.

I’ll try to keep this review as professional as I can and try to refrain from gushing and fan girl-ing too much (yes, it’s ABSOLUTELY a word!!) …..OH, WHO AM I KIDDING!! THIS. WAS. AMAZING!

Afton really has her hands full in this one! Still out for revenge, and on top of that, with all of the police tied up in all of the arson and murder going on, a gang has infiltrated Wakefield and they’re selling tainted methe to kids. Do you think that Afton is going to stand for THAT?? I sure as hell don’t!

But, first she has to deal with all of the fallout. Her actions have hurt more than herself. Being pulled into the public eye has brought her family and friends with her,

“Yes, victim, having first been falsely accused of murder, then taken hostage by her twin sister a few days later. Oh, how I detested being made to look so weak and fragile for the world to see, although it did make me a bit easier to forget.”

I loved all of the comments about the battle of the sexes in this one! Afton has some great insight into the differences between how men and women are treated with regards to crimes and sex,

“I’d never cared for playing the disenfranchised-woman card, but I had to wonder. If it had been some local man accused of murdering a known sex offender, would anyone have had a problem with it? No, he probably would’ve been labeled a modern-day hero. He probably would’ve had a parade held in his honor. He might’ve even ended up becoming our next mayor. A woman, on the other hand, was expected to embrace cruelty and injustice with tenderness and compassion, flower petals and femininity, love and forgiveness.”

I was a little sad that my favourite character wasn’t in this book much (I’m not going to say who, so when you read the series you won’t know who lives, and who doesn’t! But, she did crop up to give some amazing words of wisdom!

“We all wear masks, Afton. Sometimes it’s worth finding out what’s hiding underneath.”

The thing that I loved most about this whole series, is that even in the midst of a moral crisis, even though Afton is in chronic struggle trying to comprehend whether she’s essentially good or evil, she never loses her hilarious dry, deprecating humour. So, in the midst of death and destruction, you suddenly find yourself laughing out loud!

“And, of course, the material of the dress slid up again, which meant I was, more or less, sitting on two bare ass cheeks. And, like, I knew it was stupid, but part of me was convinced I’d contract herpes from the seat before the night was over.”

““How do you, like, not smell that, Amy? Must be there’s a dead possum under the floor or somethin’ like that.” He motioned to the spot where two floorboards were missing. “Want me to get down there an’ take a look for you, girl? Before we get busy?” Was hunting for dead possums foreplay for rednecks?”

But, the best part about THIS PARTICULAR instalment in the series is that the ending is not tied up into a nice neat bow. If you’ve started it yourself you know from the very first book that there can be no perfect ending to this…. okay, let me rephrase that. There can be an ending that’s WRITTEN perfectly! But, there is no “happily ever after” for everyone in this one! It is all tied up enough to be immensely satisfying, but left open enough that you are left thinking “….but, what is going to happen next?”

This is absolutely one of my new favourite series’ and I hope to see more from it, and from Brent in the future!

Time’s Up, Afton is Best Served with a Game Changer Cocktail

It goes without saying that this series was a Game changer!! It was all just so amazingly well written, and such a wild ride. But, this cocktail was really inspired by one of my favourite quotes from the book,

“The only sure things in life are death and taxes, or so the old adage goes, but I disagreed to an extent. There’s a third constant in life, and that is change. Nothing stays the same forever. Change is an unstoppable force. It’s inevitable, whether we’re prepared to embrace it or not.”

Ingredients

• 2 ounces Dark Rum
• ½ ounce Spiced Rum
• 2½ ounces orange juice
• 1½ ounces pineapple juice
• ½ ounce cream of coconut
• Freshly grated nutmeg for garnish

Directions

1. Pour first five ingredients into a blender with ice
2. Blend until smooth
3. Top with Nutmeg
4. CHEERS!!
