Synopsis
An impossible heist. A thief and a rogue. But will she steal his heart, instead?
The Company of Rogues finally knows the identity of the mastermind behind a plot against the queen—but their enemy is still one step ahead of them. When he kidnaps one of theirs, the Rogues plan a daring rescue mission that will lead them into the heart of the bloodthirsty Crimson Court.
It’s a job for a master thief, and there’s nothing Charlie Todd likes more than a challenge. To pull off the impossible, Charlie needs a crew, including the only thief who’s ever been able to outfox him.
He broke her heart. But now she must risk it all to save his life…
Lark’s spent years trying to forget her past, but the one thing she can’t ignore is the way a single smile from Charlie still sets her heart on fire. When he proposes they work together again, it feels just like old times, but she has one rule: this is strictly business.
It’s Charlie’s last chance to prove he can be trusted with her heart. But Lark’s keeping a deadly secret. And as passions are stirred and the stakes mount, it might be the kind of secret that could destroy them all…
Ocean’s 11 meets Dracula, in this sexy paranormal heist by USA Today Bestselling Author, Bec McMaster. If you like sexy paranormal romances, steampunk shenanigans, and plenty of action-adventure (vampires, dirigible flights, and steamy rooftop chases), then dive into this thrilling heist with Charlie and Lark.
My Thoughts
“If you think to play this game with me, then I warn you to play it carefully.”
Who DOESN’T want a steampunk Anastasia story?? I didn’t know that’s what I was getting myself into, but… YES, PLEASE!!
I had never read any of the books in this series, so I was a little worried going into it, but seeing Steampunk with Vampire type characters called “Blue Bloods” (they have bloodthirsting cravings that make them faster, stronger and give them exceptional capabilities), I knew I had to give it a shot. Boy, am I glad that I did!! McMaster was very good at explaining what may have been missed enough that I understood things that had happened, but not so much that if I had read the other novels I would be bored with the recap. (in saying that, I am ABSOLUTELY going back to read the other books!!)
I am such a sucker for steampunk and I loved the London and Russian themes in this novel! The parallels with the story of the Princess Anastasia Nikolaevna made me SO HAPPY, and was quite a pleasant surprise!! (one of my favourite mysteries!)
Then there is the romance between Lark and Charlie! It may not be for everyone, but I LOVE the friends/lovers trope!! The will they/won’t they, and will it ruin their friendship forever after being “thick as thieves” (ha ha.)
“First rule of thieves code: Don’t scare the piss out of your fellow cross-coves.”
It was so cute, following them on their journey of discovering each other as adults from the children they remember,
“Then why are you staring?”
“Because you have a little something… right here…”
He indicated his chest, and Lark looked down, as if expecting to find a tea stain or something. He could practically feel the moment she realized what he’d been referring to. Heat burned in her cheeks…”
Slowly realizing they’re true feelings for each other,
“When he looks at you, he gets this particularly constipated expression on his face. I could drop an anvil on his foot and he wouldn’t notice it if you were in the room.”
I also LOVE their rag tag band of rogues!! Definitely some amazing supporting characters in the group, and I love the loyalty and love they all have for each other! They made me laugh with their banter,
“Some bastard spilled ‘is entrails all over me boots.”
“How terribly impolite.”
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some action, some fantasy, some romance, and even a little smattering of history!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Even though I know what happens, I STILL can’t wait togo back and read it from the beginning!!

This sounds like a fun read, Nicole. Plus the cocktail sounds delicious… even though I’m clueless about both Averna amaro and Aperol… LOL, maybe that just means I need a drink, but I like the names. 😉 Happy Halloween hugs. 🎃

Thanks for checking it out, Teagan! They’re both Italian herbal appertifs. Amaro is a little more vanilla, and aperol is a little more citrus, but they’re both delicious!! 💖💖 The book was great!.. You know me and steampunk. 😘 And, a drink always helps people think better. 🍻😂

I definitely feel like you could deal with this one! Some dry sarcastic wit, lots of action, and a little romance… but, still with the focus on the story!

OK, well have finished the AFton thing, so I’ll have a little look-see on Amazon

Not sure really how I feel about the whole series, I think it didn’t help that the name Afton got up my nose for some strange reason 🙄. I kind of liked some of the premise, and how the story went, but at the same time there was a lot of convolution that I think could have been refined. I found his writing style very straightforward, simple and clear, but I missed having subtlety and nuances. I liked his characterisations, especially Kim, Chris and Tia, but Afton was a mixed bag for me ((must be the name 🤣) and I could have done without the ‘Animus’ bit, I didn’t think that added anything to the story, and there was a better way of showing the dichotomies she was going through. They are fast reads, and I did find myself motoring through them easily, so I think they are great kindle reads, but not hardbacks 🙂

I agree about Animus… Don’t know what I thought of her… There really wasn’t a big point to her except to show her internal struggle.
And, I love that you were annoyed by the name Afton, because in the 4th book when Afton is talking about leaving and changing her name to whatever instead of “boring old Afton” I made a note that just said ????? Because …. Boring?? How many Afton’s do YOU know!! 😂😂 It’s not like her name was “Sarah” or something!!

🙂 TBH I don’t think AFton should be allowed to be a persons name, maybe a horse or a tortoise or something could use it, but not a person 🤣

You found some great lines to highlight, Nicole. Your enthusiasm for the book is great. I’ll have to start at the beginning though. 🙂 Thanks for the review!

I would absolutely recommend starting from the beginning! Not because you won’t understand this one if you don’t… just because it’s SO GOOD, why WOULDN’T you start from the beginning?!

A steampunk Anastasia story huh?? 🤔🤔 Well, that sounds pretty interesting actually. And you saying you would actually go back again and read it from the beginning, has made me even more curious about it. That and that Vampire Blue Bloods type…all sound amazing (although Blue Bloods makes me think of that cop show starring Magnum P.I. lol 😂😂).
Either way: as always another winning review that stole a place on my Goodreads to read list…(you see what I did there again right? 🤔🤔😂😂) Great post!! 😘❤️

Oh my god, steampunk Anastasia?? I think I need to read this! Also, I love that the cover has the main guy just casually opening up his shirt. To show that he’s a rogue, I guess? 😛

Ha ha ha!! I’m glad you noticed that, too!!! 😂😂 I looked at the cover and thought… Is he unbuttoning?… Or is he just casually walking around with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel??… Maybe it’s a steampunk fashion trend I’ve never heard of? 🤔😅

Okay to be fair, if I was a dude in a romance novel with that kind of body, I’d totally do casual shirt half-on/half-off teases 😂
