  1. Hi Nicole, thank you for this opportunity.

I was a mainstream/corporate rock hating punk rocker throughout the eighties. I guess I remember hearing this song on the radio, but I did not realize that it was a former Beatle doing it, or maybe I thought it was Paul. Never really noticed it. When I saw your post, and saw that it was George doing the song, I figured that it was going to be a bit better than I remember. I had never heard of, nor heard a different version. I figured that I would probably like the George Harrison version better, but I would at least give James Ray a chance.

Ray started out cute and catchy. Then it became even more cute and more engaging, with unusual breaks. Then it would change into another level of catchiness. The extended break in the middle had an orchestral tone. It raised the level of the song to genre-defying heights. The arrangement on this piece is ASTONISHING! The slight Jamaican accent James sings with is so charming! I love this version!

I figured, okay, George, you’re a former Beatle, bro. You are going to have to step-up if you have chosen this song as a cover.

Then the video started. … Tacky teenie boppers. Fifties gear in an eighties video. … Okay, the band is in black and white on a steampunk oriented stage. Momentary hopes for an interesting video are soon dashed. I thought the flickering was going to trigger an epileptic fit. Phony Phil Collins on the sax. The last seventies perm is on the bass player. The one Beatle besides John that was considered to have an ounce of integrity about him, has grown a half-ass porn-stache, and is trying to be Paul McCartney. He is doing a wimpy, half-ass version of a great song. That arrangement was PATHETIC! And that stupid video?!? I guaran-damn-tee you that it was written, produced, and directed by coked-out sleaze-bag creeps from the record label.

Another hero has fallen. What a sell-out piece of shit. I’m glad John did not live to see it.

I would like to deliver this vote standing: Mr. James Ray for the win, and a humiliating black eye for a former giant.

    1. HA HA HA!!!! PHONY PHIL COLLINS!! I LOVE IT!!! 😂😂😂
I’m so glad you loved James Ray’s version and I absolutely agree with your astute observations on the sound and tone of his version! 💖💖
The video George put out is totally cheesy. But, then again… It was the 80s. 😉 George was defintitely more talented than this song portrayed, though.

      1. My pleasure Nicole. I’ve been struggling with my health issues and we’re preparing for a huge move in the next few months, so I’m completely stressed which isn’t helping things any.😔 You’re so sweet for asking. How are you doing?

I haven’t been posting a lot lately so you haven’t missed much. The only thing I’ve been able to keep up regularly is my Whimsical Wednesday posts. 🙇🏻‍♀️

      2. Understandable! Moving is never fun, and moving twice in, basically, a year?? That REALLY sucks. Just remember that I’m here for moral support if you need me! Even though I may have lost a lot of my time on the blogoshphere to my job, I’m always just an email or message away!!
