Beauty’s Curse (Once Upon a Princess #1)

Publication Date: January 2016

Genre: Fairytale Retelling/ Historical Fantasy/ Romance
For four years, Princess Aurora of Rhone—Rose to her friends—has searched the world for a way to break the curse placed on her by Magdalina, the wicked ruler of the fairies at war with her kingdom. Under the curse, Rose is doomed to die on her eighteenth birthday after pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. And time is running out.

On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Rose makes the journey home with her friends—Theo, a priest with a penchant for revenge; Mary, a young and talented fairy; and Ethan and Sophia, siblings with a troubled past–as pressure from her father, King Stefanos, leaves her with two equally unsatisfying options: Abdicate the throne, or get married.

My Thoughts

I’m refraining from rating this novel, as I’m a little confused. I actually wrote this review already thinking this was the last book in the series. I thought that a lot of things that were explained had occurred in the passed 3 installments. Then I went to create a link to the first book for those who wanted to start from the beginning, and I realized this WAS the first book!!! I’m a little lost. Maybe I was sent the wrong book?

I WILL say, that whatever I read, I ENJOYED IT!!

I do love the Queen Mother trying to explain love to her daughter even though her own relationship was WAY PASSED MESSED UP!

“Love is complicated and marriage is even more complicated – especially if there is not enough love.”

If you find out what she decided to do to face her “complicated marriage” you’d probably be thinking “….sweety? there are easier ways than THAT! I don’t think you should be preaching!”

SPEAKING of preaching! There was a little too much talk of religion, praying and God for my liking….. absolutely personal preference, and it didn’t detract from the story. Silly enough, it just starts to grate at me after a while. Although, in that, there were some good questions to get you thinking!

“Unlike Theo, Rose was not certain of God’s goodness, or even the extent of his power. What was he thinking, letting all those people and creatures and even nature itself destroy others? If he was such a good god, why did she still have the curse on her? If he was so powerful, why did he not save her from it?”

And, there was such a great message and overall tone to this book that I think everyone can appreciate,

“We talk of love and forgiveness, but when we have to go out and do it, there always seems to be trouble.”

There is an overall theme of what revenge does to people. Does it feel better when you get to exact that revenge?? Read the book to find out! )

      1. Well, apparently I can order Opihr from my local LCBO. I might have to try! And sparkling rose? I’m ALWAYS down for that!!… Maybe I’ll have to declare a National Fraggle Day!! Actually, maybe I’ll have to do little features on all my favourite bloggers and make their favourite cocktails!!! OOOOO!!! this could be fun! 😁😁

      1. LMAO!! Did you send me the series?? I’ll have to check. I know you said that you COULD. But, the cover on my kindle app definitely said “Beauty’s Curse”. But, the content seemed very much like a last book of a series… You don’t normally have an epilogue in the first book of a series. That’s why I was so confused.

    1. Ya… I’m not sure what happened. It’s definitely listed as the correct book. But, there was a lot of references to things that had happened with the characters before, and there was an epilogue… All unusual for a first book in the series. That’s why I was confused as to whether it was correct. 😕

    1. Thanks, AJ. Me too!! I’m fairly certain it’s actually Beauty’s Gift (#4 of the series) that I read. But, it showed up in my kindle as Beauty’s Curse in my Kindle app…. So, I’m still trying to figure it out! Either way it was pretty good! I just know that I missed a lot! 😅
