Hello Everyone!!

I haven’t been around much for the last couple of weeks because I’m off to Germany in a couple of days for Oktoberfest!! It’s been a lot of packing, planning and settling things at work.

So, let’s get back into things!

    1. Ha ha!! I usually just stumble across these songs. Pure luck!! Awww.. Bob’s version in my favourite in an awful kind of way. H. John Benjamin has the best voice in the universe and I love him SO MUCH!!
      And, no. I leave for Germany on Wednesday… I have nothing packed, and I work for the next 2 days. Ha ha! Should be interesting!!

    1. What?? You like a song?!? 😂😂 I didn’t get a chance to do one last week unfortunately! Trying to get all my ducks in a row.
      I’m not moving to Germany, just going for a work trip to Oktoberfest! It’s been tough because I have minimal staff and everyone important is leaving for this trip! Ha ha! So, it’s been a lot of work to make sure the place can survive while we’re gone. But, when I get back things will be back on track!! I have a bunch of posts ready to go, and a plan for Halloween that will be coming out in a post tomorrow!

  7. Oh, Nena. Not the slightest doubt. The original German version. Nena didn’t want to have anything to do with the English version except collect the royalties. Said the English lyrics completely changed the meaning of the song. It wasn’t a translation, it was a reinterpretation.

    The video was shot on a German military installation with the support of the German military. Those explosions were “safe” explosions the German soldiers would have trained with – big boom, no shrapnel. Near the end of the video, the band leaves the stage. This hadn’t been planned. They couldn’t deal with the heat, the proximity and the noise of the explosions, so they ran.

    The inspiration was a prank by students in Las Vagas who launched 99 helium balloons attached to road flares create a UFO. In the song, they are mistaken for a military attack.

    I don’t know of Nena knew of the origin of the phrase “The balloon has gone up” in warfare. In the Civil War, balloons were used for the first time for aerial observation of the battlefield. A balloon going up behind enemy lines usually meant an attack was imminent. Balloons were used for recon until WWI when aircraft were easily able to shoot them down.

    1. Thanks for the “behind the music” rundown! I love learning stuff like this!
      I definitely had to go for the German version over the English one. I agree with Nena, things always get lost in translation! There are so many nuances to different languages that a direct translation never works.
