So, this one goes out to Virginia at Rosepoint Publishing who read a fantastic book about the life of Janis Joplin and got me in a Janis kind of mood!! But, I was telling Virginia how many amazing people have done a version of this song!!

  4. Wow. All three of these blew me away.

    The Zombies
    I really dug the up-tempo. I think it was in three time. No discernible drum, but the rhythm of the guitar and organ bouncing off of each other created the effect. Good stuff, kids.

    Ella and Louis
    At first, the sound was over-produced to my ears, but I quickly acclimated to the orchestration. Somehow, a New York Broadway orchestra was able to capture the lazy heat of a Southern evening, out in the fields.Louis’s trumpet worked. I enjoyed this version.

    Janis
    Oh my Goodness. Janis is/was so sweet. Her voice conveys so much emotion. The music is beautiful. The guitars actually weave together, back and forth in an ethereal wandering. The photo show was astonishing. Every picture told a beautiful story. Women singers and band leaders are always portrayed as being perfect, or a pinnacle, but not Janis. She let you see that she was broken. Janis is such a sweet, loving soul, yet so tragic.That song moved me. Janis moves me. The Zombies, Ella, and Louis were all wonderful, but Janis haunts me and moves me. Love you and miss you, girl. Miss Joplin for the win, please.

    1. Yay!! Virginia will be happy about that. I completely agree with your thoughts on the Zombies and Satchmo and Ella! They are great!! One is more upbeat, one is more… Romantic? And, Janis. Definitely haunting! 👍👍 Thanks for the input, Icky my pal! 😁🍻

  5. oh they are all different alright, Nicole. but you can’t compare apples to oranges. and the zombies…who? now Louis is an American institution–LOVE his work–and you can’t beat Ella for a mellow sound. But Louie, when I think of Louie (giving my age away again), I think of his quiet little song, What a Wonderful World, sang in Good Morning, VIetnam. Still gives me chills–the emotion then, the atmosphere, and then here comes Louis–even without his horn, a force to be reckoned with. No, dear, you tried, but I’m still Janis–all the way for Summertime. The song demands emotion, passionate feeling. Demand! Janis delivers.

    1. Ha ha! Don’t Bash the Zombies!! They are pretty popular themselves. You’ve probably heard the song that they’re famous for, “Time of the Season”? Which was also featured in a pretty great movie “Awakenings” with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams… Ok, it’s no “Good Morning, Vietnam”, but it’s a pretty great movie!!…. Maybe Robin Williams is the factor?? 🤔🤔 … I miss that amazing man… 😢

    In the end, I’m going for Ella and Louis. Their combination of music awesomeness is always instantenously calming to me and I love them and their version for that
