4.5 out of 5 Stars
Thank you to author E. Michael Helms for calling this wonderful book to my attention!
Synopsis
When PI Mac McClellan’s girlfriend convinces him to join the Palmetto Paranormal Society, he becomes embroiled in a case of whooodunnit. The society president, while investigating an old hotel, is found dead at the foot of the stairwell, his neck broken. The man’s secretary and current squeeze stands horrified beside his body. Authorities rule the death an accident. Mac has doubts—no one heard the man tumbling down the stairs. Then the secretary dies in an apparent suicide. Two deaths in two paranormal investigations, and not a peep out of either victim. Mac suspects there’s more going on than a vengeful spirit.
Book 4 in the Mac McClellan Mystery series, which began with Deadly Catch.
My Thoughts
Mac might just be my new favourite person… I am legitimately disappointed that he’s fictional! A man after my own heart, he drinks (a man who has a flask of scotch in him pretty much at all times?? COME ON!), he’s funny and self-deprecating, a little pervy, has a big dog and a big truck. I just realised that, besides the big dog, I pretty much just described my man. NO WONDER I LOVE MAC SO MUCH! 😂
Some of Mac’s comments got a LITTLE old. Like describing women “from stem to stern”, or things like a character introducing herself as Brie and him thinking, “Brie, like the cheese. Tasty.” But, at the same time it suited him so well I didn’t mind. I could just picture him in an old film noir or pulp fiction kind of detective story! He seemed like he was a character from a different time.
I loved the mix of ghost hunting (especially with Mac’s disbelief) and mystery. I honestly wish there had been a little bit more in the ghostly realm in the book. But, I definitely won’t complain.
All in all a really fun mystery and I can’t wait to read more of Mac’s adventures!!

Author Bio
I was born in Georgia way back in the last century but grew up and lived most of my life in Panama City, Florida. In 2004 my wife and I moved to the Upstate region of South Carolina in the shadows of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a land of stunning vistas and numerous waterfalls.
I’ve been traditionally published since 1990 when my Vietnam War memoir, The Proud Bastards, was published. It’s about my time as a combat U.S. Marine in 1967-68. It’s still in print after all these years, currently with Simon & Schuster/Pocket. I’ve since written a few novels in different genres. I’m currently writing the Mac McClellan Mystery series which is set along the coast of the Florida Panhandle where I grew up.

Deadly Spirits is Best Served with a 12 yr Old Dewar Whisky
Just pour it in your glass, over ice, or on “the rocks” (as I sometimes like to use whisky rocks). However you enjoy it…. just make sure you ENJOY IT!
CHEERS!
I like the words current squeeze.. This sounds like a fun book. Paranormal cozy? Would you call it that? Maybe I should go to Nina’s blog and scare her, it would become paranormal cozy… 😂 😂 My brain slow just like my jokes.
But lovely review. Glad you found your Man or Mac or big stuff in the book 😂😂 here I thought you were into me…. 😂 😂

Actually, paranormal cozy is a GREAT name for it! 💖💖 I think Nina would really like it. Just enough mystery, and I think Nina is safe from any scare factor! 😂

It really was! I had to special order the scotch, or I would have had this up sooner. I can’t wait to backtrack and start from the beginning now! Another reason that I loved this book was, even though it’s book 4 in the series, I didn’t feel lost at all. And, they weren’t giving everything away from past books, so I still feel like I can backtrack and really enjoy them!

Not a bad scotch that.

Defintitely not! It was between Dewar and Dalmore. Mac drinks both.. But, my special ordered Dalmore hasn’t come in yet 😣… So, Dewar won by default as I didn’t want to wait any longer to get my review up! 😂🍻🥃

I like how Shalini described it by the synopsis. A “paranormal cozy” 😊 there isn’t a huge amount of the paranormal. But, it is a big part of the story! If you want something really fun to curl up with I absolutely recommend it!! MAC IS THE BEST! 😁🍻

Well, I sure appreciate the wonderful review, Nicole. All the “warm and fuzzy” comments from the ladies are welcomed also. Here’s a kicker: Just last night I poured myself a hefty “shot” of The Dalmore, and today–voila!–your review appears! Hmm, I wonder if that’s a sign that I should enjoy a nightly shot? Naw, probably not a good way to hustle reviews. 🙂
Thanks again, and I sincerely hope you enjoy Mac’s previous adventures. Working on #5 in the series as I write this.
All best,
–Michael

Hi James, you do so many excellent reviews of mysteries. It would be fun to see another of yours on a Mac McClellan Mystery. I always look at your reviews on Goodreads. They are a lot of fun to check out.
