Thank you to Jill at Book N All and Joffe Books for having me on this tour in exchange for my honest opinion!

Synopsis

Looking for a brilliant best-selling murder mystery with a feisty female detective?

DETECTIVE HILLARY GREENE IS SOLVING THE COLD CASES NO ONE ELSE COULD CRACK.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “WALK A NARROW MILE.”

Three missing young women. One evil stalker. But Hillary doesn’t think it all adds up.

Hillary is recovering from the vicious attack by her stalker. It appears that he is also behind the disappearance and murder of three women. Her bosses want these unsolved cases closed, but Hillary has a theory that will shock everyone.

However, as the truth comes to light, Hillary and the team are faced with a dire emergency — can they prevent an imminent murder?

Hillary Greene has returned to Thames Valley Police HQ, acting as a cold-case consultant for the Crime Review Team, looking into murders which the police have never been able to solve.

She wasn’t sure she wanted to go back. But solving crimes is irresistible for Hillary Greene. And it doesn’t hurt that her new boss is devastatingly handsome.

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to the absolutely thrilling conclusion.

MURDER NEVER MISSES is the fourteenth in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

THE DETECTIVE
DI Hillary Greene
An attractive, single woman nearing the landmark age of fifty, Hillary Greene was a police officer of many years’ experience (earning the rank of DI) and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knew how the system worked, and was always fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. Forced to retire early through no fault of her own, she has now returned to the force as a civilian consultant on cold cases. She still enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the wily Commander Marcus Donleavy, but it is her new boss, the very attractive Steven Crayle, who is likely to cause her the most problems now!

My Thoughts

Another great story of the strong and feisty Hillary Green. She really is such a strong, amazing woman! I’m really enjoying this character. She’s strong, but not in a way where she’s too good for everybody and always pushing them away. She seems like a normal working woman, and I appreciated that.

In the aftershock of being attacked by her stalker, she’s having a bit of a tough time, and this case doesn’t help. Facing the cold cases of three missing girls who she thinks may have been taken by her stalker she can’t seem to find a connection between them to figure out who he might be.

Now, this is a slow burn remember, she’s looking into cold cases. But, it really kept me interested, and the chapters from the stalkers point of view were interesting because you already know who he is.

I read the book before this one (they are the only two in Faith’s series, and I’m glad that I read the other one, because it really is the beginning focus on the stalker and the explanation of the attack. But, I believe that a good wnoigh job has been done in both books that I also could have read them both stand alone (but obviously, it’s better to read them in order as reading two back to back has made me want to go back and start from the beginning!

I was a little wary of Hillary’s relationship (I won’t tell you who it is with, in case you want to start from the beginning!), I didn’t want to ruin the ways of her working habits and her attitude at work. It didn’t! If anything, it may have added a little extra fun tension.

Jimmy was and is probably my favourite character, also retired, he helps Hillary on her cases and he’s such a big hearted sweetheart! He’s always willing to put himself on the line for her because “what are they going to do, fire me?”

All in all, if you’re a fan of a slower, but well paced, almost Kathy Reichs kind of mystery (but, without all the technical jargon) I would highly recommend this series!

Faith Martin has been writing for over 25 years, in four genres and under four different pen names. She was born in Oxford and sets most of her crime novels within sight of the city of dreaming spires. A real nature lover and afficionado of the countryside, descriptions of wildlife and native flora often find their way into her manuscripts. Right now, JOFFE BOOKS are re-issuing the DI Hillary Greene novels in new updated editions! The first 13 books in the series are available now.

Her romance novels, written under the name of Maxine Barry, are now available from Corazon Books. IMPOSTERS In PARADISE, and HEART OF FIRE are both out, and others will very quickly become available in the future.

Her first foray into writing ‘spooky’ crime, (and written under the pen name of Jessie Daniels) comes out in November 2017. THE LAVENDER LADY CASEFILE is published by Robert Hale, an imprint of Crowood Press.

As Joyce Cato, she writes more classically-inspired ‘proper’ whodunits. So, if you like an amateur sleuth, plenty of clues and red herrings, plus a baffling murder mystery to solve, these are the books for you.

Murder Never Misses is Best Served with a Sweet Vermouth and Lemonade

This was one of the characters (Vivienne)’s favourite drink. She was an annoying character, but necessary to the plot!

At first I scoffed at it thinking it would be way too sweet….. It is so DANGEROUS!! It tastes like lemonade! That’s it!

Ingredients

  • Lemonade
  • Sweet Vermouth (start with 2 oz then top up with the other, I wound up at about a 40/60 split and it was delicious)
  • Ice
  • (Optional) Club Soda or just use Sparkling Lemonade

Directions

  1. Add Ice to glass
  2. Add Vermouth and lemonade (or half lemonade 1/2 club soda, or all Sparkling lemonade)
  3. Stir
  4. CHEERS!!

  1. Ooooohhhh…nice one. Gotta love these kind of stories, and I also like the lead you are describing here. I have never read anything by this author before (yes, yes I know….where have I been, probably again under that rock where I am so fond of hiding every time), but I’ll be sure to check this out at some point. Wonderful review and don’t drink too much of that erm…lemonade 😂😂

    1. It’s hard not to drink too much of the lemonade… Sounds like a cult thing (don’t drink the Kool-Aid!!) and it’s okay! You’re not under a rock! I’ve only read 2 of her exorbanant amount of books, and I only heard about her when I was contacted for the blog tour for the last one! I’ve definitely got her on my list now, though! 💖

      1. Phew..glad to hear it. I really need to reserve a month to get some reading done. Have read way too little these past months, time to play some catch up (and stop watching anime/k-dramas lol 😂😂)

  2. i enjoy detective books, but while i was reading your review, i realized that i can’t come up with the detective books i’ve read, except for the In Death series. How’s the romance level on the two you read?

  3. I like the sound of Hillary Green. This reminded me a lot of a great British TV series called New Tricks about a group of 3 retired police men and a lady boss who solved cold cases. Well worth a watch if you can get it.
That drink is one of my faves 🙂

    1. I’m going to have to watch this! I LOVE crime dramas!! 💖💖 It’s been hard to find a good one since a lot of my go to’s started changing cast and getting out of hand! If you liked this show you would probably like these books. I’m going to try to head back to the beginning to start them properly!

    1. I feel like they must have somewhat different timelines. It seems like she starts as a DI and then just in the last few books she’s retired, but back to work the cold cases. I think that’s what makes it easier to read some of the later ones as stand alone.

  4. An awesome drink to go with a great sounding book. I am sure I read a review of another book in this series on your blog. I will have to give this series a try.
