I am Nicole and I am an avid reader and an alcohol connoisseur.. which it totally different from an alcoholic.. I swear. I am trying to get into the editing world and in doing so I learned that giving my opinions and networking in as many forms of media as I could is the way to get heard! I will also say that I am very honest and I will not pander to the popular or feel the need to give a good review just because I got an ARC read of a certain book. I believe that everyone deserves the truth no matter how much it hurts.. EVEN ME! I would love everyone’s opinions! AND LET THE DRINKS FLOW!! (Let’s just not have the drinks make the honesty get TOO out of hand!) ;p

      1. I have to admit I’d never heard that version before, with others taking over the singing. But Carlos Santana’s guitar licks (and facial emotion tuned to his runs) won me over. Yeah, it was over-produced for my tastes, but his lead guitar playing won me over.

    Over 6 minutes for ‘Fleetwood Mac’, and then over eleven minutes for Carlos?
    Uhh. You’re killing me, Nicole.

    Okay, going into this, I am a big ‘Fleetwood Mac hater. No reason. I think it was an over-exposure to ‘Rumours’ as a child that killed them for me. {Coincidentally, I did stagehand work for them a couple of weeks ago. It was a cool gig.} Also going in, I am favourable towards Santa. I almost did not even listen to them, and just plucked down my vote with the original impression, but you are a reviewer, and your readers are objective book reviewers, so I thought that I should give these songs a fair shake.

    Mick Fleetwood went first.
    This was not a Fleetwood Mac that I knew. These kids were dirty punk garage band rockers. They were into it. They were playing in front of a dosed house. No Spinning Stevie Nicks, nor sleazy pretty boy Lindsay Huckingbum. Mick looked like a child. The musicians I did not recognize. I hate to admit it, but that was bad-ass version of the song. And they wrote it.

    Then I tried to listen to Santana.
    Dang it, Nicole, WHY DIDN’T YOU GET AN OLD VERSION OF THIS SONG?
    I bet you could have found a version from the early seventies that would have rocked. 😦
    This 2011 version of Santana was Over-produced. It was Way too big of a production. It lost what soul he used to bring.

    The over-produced Santana, playing for rich people was sad.
    That effed up production of a dirty hippy band wins.

    1. This is, sadly, the only live version I could find from Santana. And I figured that if I did a love version of Fleetwood, it’s only fair to do a love version of Santana.
      I was going to say “you don’t like Fleetwood Mac??”… Then you explained…. I get that. And “rumors” ?? That’s like THE WORST song to be over exposed to!! I hope you’ll give them another chance.
      Also, THANK YOU for listening to the songs. I absolutely hate it when people just vote for the version they know without listening to anything… It totally defeats the purpose of my “who did it better?” I always know the songs and even I listen to them first to get an impression!!

      1. I liked that it was a head to head ‘live’ contest. I figured that was what was up.
        Santana is often credited for writing that song, and is strongly associated with it.

        I keep exposing my secret music dislikes.
        You act as if you don’t dislike anybody. Come on, Nicole, there must be a band somewhere that makes your skin crawl.

        I don’t mean to, but I often have a pre-concieved impression going into these contests, but after a fair chance is given, I am very likely to change my mind. I love it! That is the best part of Monday morning!

      2. Oh, there are MANY bands and artists that I don’t like!! 🤣🤣 But, I am a music enthusiast in general, so I try to keep an open mind.. You’ll definitely find me saying I didn’t like a band or artist, but you’ll never find me saying that I don’t like a type of music!

I really didn’t like either version so I dug deeper and listened to about 50 other versions and it was a toss up between Gary Hoey and Willie and the Bandits – but I think my final vote would be for Willie and the Bandits. Actually my vote would have been for Black Magic Marker (Parody of Black Magic Woman) by Rich Cosley it reminds me of that great parody The Ball Peen Hammer Song.

      1. Okay, I’ve had a decent amount of Happy Hour entertainment. I still vote for Santana. I think it was his drummer (?) who sang lead on this song. His vocals are spot-on for this particular tune. I still say that Santana himself was (is) the best at filling the song with emotion. I still occasionally hear it and I “cringe,” waiting for those haunting lyrics and Carols Santana’s lead guitar. One of my favorite from the “days gone by.”
