4 out of 5 Stars
Counios & Gane were just at the Saskatchewan Book Awards last week after being nominated for an award on their newest Shepherd & Wolfe novel “Wolfe in Shepherd’s Clothing“. So, in support I thought I would post my review for their first novel in the series “Along Comes a Wolfe“
Synopsis
The first exciting adventure of Shepherd and Wolfe.
High school student, Sheri Beckman, has disappeared. After a massive search turns up nothing, her boyfriend, Tony Shepherd, joins forces with the wise-ass troublemaker, Charlie Wolfe, to find out what happened.
However, Charlie’s way isn’t always lawful, so when another missing girl shows up dead, Tony must decide whether doing right sometimes means doing wrong. Against a ruthless killer, they must work together and stop him before someone else dies.
These aren’t your parent’s boy detectives.
My Thoughts
These may not be the Hardy Boys, BUT I LOVE THEM!! What a wonderful contrast in characters. Tony Shepherd is the serious, logical one and Charlie Wolfe the wise cracking, erratic one. It really gave the book a Holmes and Watson sort of vibe (with more humorous banter!)
“Ah, look at that. We ran this trail together. Something even you didn’t do with her.”
“Are you just naturally a dick or does it take practice?”
“At last!”
“What?”
“You quit whining and had a bit of a backbone there for a second.”
I definitely resounded more with Charlie! His mentality and rationale absolutely made me think that he and I would be great friends…. if we wanted friends.
“We’ve almost gone around the whole campus!”
“The whole place is one big loop,to herd the sheep in circles and keep us from realizing we’re being indocrinated into the system.”
The mystery definitely kept me guessing to the very end! I loved the chapters that were through the eyes of the killer. You got a peek into their motivation, but no clue as to who they may be.
I will say the one little in this book that got to me a bit (and you will all probably think I’m crazy and think “really, Nicole??”) was Shepherd’s family. They are SO SWEET!! Like, “Full House” sickly sitcom kind of sweet. Maybe it’s just me. If any of you have a family like this, please comment and prove me wrong! Tony is such a good kid, doing everything without being asked, they all talk about EVERYTHING and they’re always getting through everything together. Again. I know I’m crazy. But, I’ve been in MANY households with teenagers and I’ve never seen a family like this! It just rang a little un-realistic to me… But, if that’s my only silly complaint, then the book must be pretty good!!
I can’t wait to continue the partnership of Shepherd and Wolf, and to learn more about the mysterious life of Charlie Wolfe!!

The characters were so much fun. They really made the book something better than your typical mystery (… Not like there’s ANYTHING wrong with a typical mystery!!) but, the characters gave the book a little more flavour! 😉
Also, SUPER short chapters!! So, it was one of those books you’d go “oh… The next chapter it only 2 pgs… I should just read it. Wait, the one after that is only 3 pgs… Well, I can get through that…” and then the book is done. 😂😂

They definitely make it so much easier to read! … Unless they are short chapters written by Dan Brown…. Then I want to rip it in 2 and burn it… 😅😅

It’s cool to have them balanced out, instead of having a smart one and a dumb one. I get that impression, anyway.
However,
I don’t like the way that drink is looking at me…

EXACTLY!! They were both smart! Just, in their own ways. It was a really fun contrast and I loved that it wasn’t one of them figuring everything out and the other tagging along like a puppy.

Ooh Green! Also, I know American people have apple-pie families, but thought you lot were made of sterner stuff! 🤣🤣.

Ha ha!! Ya, I just found this family a little TOO “Leave it to Beaver”! Perfect family all having family talks, being supportive, and hugging? The kid skips school and his parents sit him down with tea and tell him they love him. That would NOT happen in my family!! 🙄😅…. Although, I do remember a night at about 16 or 17, crawling up the stairs drunk from a young wild night out and my mother catching me and saying “you look tired… I think you should get to bed.” …. And then we never spoke of it again. That’s MY family talks!! 🤣🤣🤣🍻
