S.O.S! The Reading Slump

Hello All,

So, I put up a post yesterday letting everyone know why I haven’t been around for a little while, and explaining my plans for the future. If you missed it, check it out here!

Well, now I have a problem. I’ve promised to get back to my reviews but, I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump!! I have some amazing books to choose from, but as soon as I pick up a book… I fall asleep.

I just can’t seem to get into anything!!

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get out of this slump??

What is a book that has got you out of a slump in the past??

  1. Nowadays I watch Netflix and see romantic movies and go Aww and cry then I check out other movies and put them on my list… Or I play old Madonna songs and dance to them… Yes I did yesterday… Today nothing moves.. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

      1. I’ve had the book “bird box” for AGES so, I refuse to watch the show (… Movie?) whatever it is… Until I read the book. Love by Chance and October Kiss are really cute though! They melt my little heart when everything turns out well!

      2. I feel ya. Even being in a relationship for 10 years, I watch these movies and my heart hurts and I sigh and think….. MY relationship isn’t like that… But, then NO ONE’S is. That’s why it’s fiction. 😂😂

    1. Oh, I’ve been on movies for about 2 months now. Ha ha ha!! I’ve been bingeing A LOT of movies and t.v. shows (… Sadly, most of the movies have been Hallmark… 😅) now, my problem is getting OFF the movies. I may need a 12 step program to ease me back into books! 😂😂📚

    1. It’s been longer than a couple of days for me, I’m sad to say. I think my new work schedule is making things a challenge. I’ve never been a “productive in the day” person. So, before work is pretty much shot. Then, when I get home from work it’s between midnight and 1am and I’d rather just throw on a silly show or movie than read.. Maybe I just have to get into the groove.
The winter doesn’t help. It gets light so late and dark so early here that it’s hard to get motivated at ANY time of the day!! It was – 31 celcius here the last couple of days… Doing ANYTHING at that temperature should be outlawed!!

      1. -31C?? Are you perhaps in Siberia? I always have a book to read in bed at bedtime, I only manage a chapter before I’m off to sleep so maybe 5-10mins tops, it settles the mind and you can get through a book quite easily that way even when you’re in a slump.

      2. Very true. I should really get back into that habit! I always have a book next to my bed…. Or a stack of them… But, I haven’t been picking them up lately. Actually, I get watching something after work and half the time wind up passing out on the couch until 4am….not a good practice…
And, not Siberia. Welcome to January in Canada!! We have about a foot of snow (very low for the norm) and temperatures anywhere between -9 to -40 with windchill.

      3. I would literally die if there was Frost , you would find me in some ditch with two broken legs as I tried my best to bike home under frosty conditions. 🤔 Then again if it was frosty I probably call in sick

  2. I can name some that kept me awake! The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is the first in the Gentleman Bastards series but does well as a stand-alone too. The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombe is classic grimdark, but you need to read all three books to get the complete story. And Mark Lawrence’s Broken Kingdom series was mesmerizing to me, but it is quite dark. Have you read any of these? Hope that helps!

    1. I’ve had the whole Gentleman Bastards series for about… 2 years now?? AND I’VE NEVER READ THEM!! I should really get to them. They looked great, which is why I bought them, and then they just kind of got lost in the shuffle, I think??

  3. Haha, try reading at a different time of day – with your breakfast? Or try putting a pile beside you and reading just the first paragraph of each, then pick. You may find you might continue with one anyway! Good luck!

    1. Ya. I do need to start reading in the morning… Since it’s pretty much the only time I have with my new job now! … My brain doesn’t seem to like to function in the morning… But, maybe it will be a good change!
And, the first paragraph thing is a fantastic idea!! I may have to do that! 😀

  5. Hmmm🤔🤔🤔 Well….Would it help if I just started acting very angry all of a sudden totally out of character and say: ” Nicole get out of that reading slump!!! You totally don’t have one!!! It’s all in your mind!!!” 🤔🤔🤔 Nawwwww….probably not (not least because of the fact that you probably don’t believe I would get angry anyway…🤔🤔)
Hmmm🤔🤔🤔….Well….how about……erm….how about alternating Music Monday with Reading Slump Monday and ask one of your readers (your choice) to make a suggestion for a book you should read, and then after two weeks you have to post a review for that book? 🤔🤔 Just an idea….maybe a crazy one, but despite you still not believing that I am pretty crazy it’s a good one??🤔🤔 Oh well…other thant that you can just start reading childrens picture books lol 😂😂😂

    1. Ha ha!! Well, you’ll be happy to hear that I believe that YOUR BOOK has helped me claw my way out of my slump!! Thank you for writing “Academic Curveball” or I may still be staring at a wall twiddling my thumbs! 😂😂 … Now I just have to hope it sticks…

  6. I usually have at least one big reading slump a year. I sometimes just have to let them run their course, but I do find dropping everything I’m reading and picking up a short quick read helps. Sometimes you just need to finish something.

    1. I think I MAY have crawled out… I’m hoping I stick with it! I found a couple of cute, easy reads and went through them like crazy!! … I think I just had to forget about the books I was expected to read for a little bit and read something that I wasn’t feeling stressed to get to.

  7. Well, i don’t watch movies, but when i’m on a reading slump, i often write. or i change the current genre i was obssessed on…. I’d also prefer the new book be funny. i’m currently reading Wait with me by Amy Daws, it’s sexy, funny, and interesting. But The hating game, if you haven’t read it yet, took me out of a slump a while back.
or just go out with friends.

    1. I actually think I may have crawled out of my slump!! We’ll see if it keeps up… But, the books that seem to have helped me claw out of the abyss were “Academic Curveball” by James J. Cudney and “The Perfect Fit” by Mary Jane Baker. I started them both simultaneously hoping one would stick… And I couldn’t put either of them down!! 😂😂

  8. When I’m in a reading slump, it can go two ways. Either I avoid books, to get my energy back up. In that case: Netflix and a lot of outdoor time! After a bit I’m ready to settle in a comfy spot get back to the book world. OR I like to browse upcoming releases in my favourite genres. I get all kinds of hype from what is coming my way, and it gets me re-excited for what is already on my TBR.

  9. Haha I empathize!! I’ve been trying to tackle this 600+ page book and I’m loving it but if I try reading it at night I only get to like, 10 pages before I fall asleep! Playing video games with no storylines sometimes helps me with slumps! Mindless demon killing/city building/farming gets me craving stories after a while, so THEN I turn to books. 😀

    1. I have TOTALLY been bingeing on the mindless indie steam games!! You should see the some ridiculous, fun puzzle or point & click games I’ve downloaded in the last little while…. Probably part of the reason I STOPPED reading… 😂😂
